About

penny dreadful posterNoir on Eighth – An original, epic new serial novel in the grand tradition of a “Penny Dreadful” – in ten delightful chapters, written in 2015 by twelve of Calgary’s brilliant writers, and featuring some of our city’s quirkiest historical characters and events.

Is the skeleton buried under the front steps of a small house in East Village after a recent flood an echo of the plight of our murdered and missing Indigenous women? An unassuming historian named Aaron wants to know what the bones mean. Is our past bound to our present in more ways than we can imagine? Aaron can’t help it – he has to find out. Especially when the history of East Village exposes some uncomfortable family secrets, and one of his best friends winds up dead in his house. Suddenly it’s personal.

Combining humor and suspense and tackling a few provocative ethical questions along the way, this story has the ghosts of historic East Village walking alongside the visionary artists and ambitious developers of the 21st century. By turns exciting, wise, and inventive, this is one of the most thought-provoking and entertaining yarns you will have experienced in a very long time.
